Lyrical/Contemporary
Lyrical and Contemporary dance are very interpretive in regards to choreography. Lyrical is more balletic and expressive, Contemporary is more edgy and abstract. In this class, we explore both styles along with conditioning exercises that extend a dancer’s ability to execute movement with strength, style, range, athleticism and fluidity.
Contemporary dance almost defies description because it can be balletic or wholly abstract, jazz-influenced or lyrical, structured or unconventional. Modern dance pioneers such as Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham paved the way for a new contemporary technique and vocabulary to flourish and influence how we dance. Contemporary dance continues to grow in popularity due, in part, to its accessibility to dancers. Contemporary simply allows more freedom of movement than other dance styles.
A great Lyrical/ Contemporary dancer is someone who can captivate an audience by being honest and truthful to their story. In this class, a great deal of focus is placed on the intention of a routine. We use emotions, breath and movement to drive and express that intention so that it connects with an audience.
